    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is high-temperature electrical cable?

High-temperature electrical cable is designed to maintain reliable electrical insulation and flexibility at temperatures above the limits of standard electrical cable. Depending on the construction, these cables may use PVC, silicone rubber, halogen-free insulation, fibreglass braid, fibre PET braid or specialised furnace-grade materials.

    Which cable should I choose?

Cable selection should be based on the operating temperature, voltage, conductor size, required flexibility and surrounding environment. PVC cable is suited to general wiring, while Betatherm provides a halogen-free option. Belden offers a fibreglass braided jacket for mechanical protection, SB/Silabraid provides flexible 1.1kV performance for motors and generators, Silicone Rubber Cable is suited to flexible 200°C wiring, and NVS Cable is designed for extreme oven and furnace temperatures.

PVC vs silicone cable – what is the difference?

PVC Single Core Cable is rated to 105°C and is suited to general industrial and commercial wiring. Silicone Rubber Cable is rated to 200°C and remains flexible at elevated temperatures, making it better suited to heaters, ovens, motors and high-temperature machinery.

When should I use fibreglass braided cable?

Fibreglass braided cable is typically selected where additional heat resistance and mechanical protection are required. Belden Glass Braided Silicone Rubber Cable combines silicone rubber insulation with a fibreglass braided jacket for demanding industrial wiring applications.

What is the difference between Belden and SB/Silabraid cable?

Both cables are rated to 180°C, but they have different constructions and typical applications. Belden uses silicone rubber insulation with a glass braided fibreglass jacket and is commonly selected for high-temperature wiring requiring mechanical protection. SB/Silabraid is a flexible 1.1kV cable with a Class 5 tinned copper conductor, silicone rubber insulation and a silicone resin-varnished fibre PET braid. It is particularly suited to motors, generators, transformers, renewable-energy equipment and electrical cabinets.

    What does halogen-free mean?

Halogen-free cable is manufactured without halogen-containing insulation materials. In the event of fire, it is designed to reduce the release of corrosive and hazardous halogen gases compared with conventional cable materials.

Can these cables be used outdoors?

Outdoor suitability depends on the specific cable construction and its resistance to moisture, ultraviolet exposure, chemicals and mechanical damage. Contact ATS with your installation conditions so the most appropriate cable can be confirmed.

Can I buy these cables by the metre?

The cables in this collection are generally supplied in complete rolls or manufacturer supply lengths. Most standard ranges are supplied in 100 metre rolls, while larger Belden sizes may be supplied in 50 metre rolls. Supply lengths for specialist cables such as SB/Silabraid may vary and will be confirmed with your quotation.

    What colours are available?

Colour availability varies by cable type and size. Available options across the range include red, black, white, blue, orange, brown and green/yellow earth cable. Belden and SB/Silabraid are supplied in black only, while some other colours and sizes may be supplied on request.

    What sizes are available?

Available sizes vary by product. Silicone Rubber and PVC Single Core Cable are offered across a broad size range. Betatherm is stocked in 1.5mm², 2.5mm² and 4mm², with selected larger sizes available on request. SB/Silabraid is available from 4mm² through to 150mm², while selected NVS Oven & Furnace Cable sizes are supplied on request.

Is SB/Silabraid suitable for motors and generators?

Yes. SB/Silabraid is designed for flexible, high-temperature 1.1kV electrical connections and is commonly used with medium-voltage motors and generators, including starter-coil-to-junction-box connections. It is also suitable for transformers, wind energy equipment, solar inverters and electrical cabinets.

Can you source other cable sizes?

Yes. ATS can source additional cable sizes, colours and specialist high-temperature cable constructions through our supplier network. Minimum order quantities, manufacturer supply lengths and lead times may apply.
