What is enamelled copper wire?

Enamelled copper wire, also known as magnet wire, is a copper conductor coated with a thin enamel insulation. It is used for motors, transformers, coils and other electrical windings.

What is the difference between copper wire and magnet wire?

Standard copper wire is bare or PVC-insulated, while magnet wire has an enamel coating that allows it to be wound tightly without short-circuiting.

Is copper wire magnetic?

Pure copper is non-magnetic. The term “magnet wire” comes from its use in electromagnetic windings, not because the copper itself is magnetic.

What sizes are available?

Advanced Thermal Supplies stocks enamelled copper wire (also known as magnet wire) in 0.5–5 kg spools and 1–3 kg loose shanks (2 mm+) and larger spools for trade size needs. Our standard stocked range is Grade 2, Class 200 enamelled copper winding wire, used for motors, transformers, coils, alternators and other industrial winding applications, with Australia-wide shipping from our Adelaide warehouse.

We can also assist with specialised winding wire requirements including Grade 1 solderable PUR wire, Corona / spiked winding wire, sectional and transformer wire, and tinned copper fuse wire.

Our standard enamelled copper winding wire (magnet wire) is Grade 2, Class 200 and is the winding wire stocked and sold by Advanced Thermal Supplies.

Grade 2 refers to the enamel insulation build, with a heavier insulation build than Grade 1. It is widely used for motors, transformers, generators, alternators, coils and industrial rewinding applications.

Unlike solderable PUR wire, our standard Grade 2 enamelled copper wire requires the enamel insulation to be removed at the termination before making an electrical connection.

PUR-1 / Grade 1 is a 130°C solderable polyurethane enamelled copper winding wire with a lighter insulation build than Grade 2. The solderable enamel allows electrical connections to be made without mechanically stripping the insulation first.

MagneSol is a recognised trade name for solderable enamelled winding wire, including specifications such as MagneSol U-180.

PUR-1 / Grade 1 Solderable Copper Winding Wire is available on request. Please contact us with your required wire diameter, grade and specification for availability.

Corona / spiked winding wire is designed for demanding motor and industrial winding applications where additional insulation protection is required.

Its specialised insulation system provides improved durability in applications subject to vibration, movement and demanding operating conditions, including large motors and mining equipment.
